Michelle Payne, who made history in 2015 aboard Prince Of Penzance (NZ) (Pentire {GB}) when becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, has revealed that she hopes to reach another milestone by riding a horse she trains in the race.

Speaking to racing.com, thee 31-year-old confirmed that she will continue to combine race-riding with her training duties in 2017 but that retirement from the saddle is not too far away.

She said, “It’s a very dangerous sport, and I’ve had my fair share of falls and don’t want to push my luck. In saying that, I think you have to live your life doing what you love doing because you never know what’s around the corner.”

Payne aims to follow in the footsteps of a number of Australian trainers in searching for a Cup horse in Europe. “My main plan is to hopefully in mid-year, June or July, head over to Europe and find myself a horse for the Melbourne Cup. The plan would be to ride and train that myself. It couldn’t get any more special than that. You’ve got to dream big, and that’s what I’m doing.”

Following a successful campaign for the Gai Waterhouse-trained dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}), who is owned by the all-female ‘It’s All About The Girls’ syndicate, Payne also announced a new venture with Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock entitled ‘Women In Racing’. The initiative is aimed at increasing the number of female racehorse owners.

“Riding is my life, and mainly you see men at the races enjoying the sport, and that’s fantastic,” said Payne. “But it’s great if we can get more women involved as well. It’s so much fun.”
