‘TDN Rising Star’ Lady Shipman (Midshipman–Sumthingtotalkabt by Mutakddim), an 11-time stakes winner and multiple course record setter, has been retired from racing and will be bred to leading young sire Uncle Mo.

Winner of this year’s GIII Royal North S. at Woodbine and a very close runner-up in last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland, the Randall E. Lowe homebred retires with a record of 21-13-2-2 and earnings of $902,387. The 4-year-old will be offered in foal by Taylor Made on behalf of Lowe at next year’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Lady Shipman RNA’d for $35,000 as an OBAPR juvenile.

“Dr. Blair at Ocala Equine Hospital made a comment to me and said, ‘What else does she have to prove?,’ explained Lowe, a retired insurance executive, when reached for comment. “And that kind of hit home. I like getting my picture taken and winning races, but she doesn’t have anything left to prove. It’s on to the next stage and what else but to breed her with one of the hottest stallions out there.”

Lowe continued, “Am I going to miss her? Yes I am. But I know whatever home she goes to they’ll treat her very well.”

Lady Shipman recorded triple digit Beyer Speed Figures in seven races, including a career-best 108 in Monmouth’s 2015 Klassy Briefcase S. She set track records at both Saratoga (1:00.46 in the Coronation Cup S. going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf) and OBS (OBS Sprint S. going six furlongs on the all-weather track in 1:08.8) in 2015. She was campaigned throughout her career by trainers Kathleen O’Connell and Kiaran McLaughlin.

Duncan Taylor, President/CEO of Taylor Made Farm, said, “Lady Shipman retires as one of the greatest American female turf sprinters ever. She is an outstanding broodmare prospect.”

Lowe added that Lady Shipman’s five-time winning dam, the 13-year-old Sumthingtotalkabt, will be bred to Nyquist and also be offered in foal next November. She is currently in foal to Seek Again. Sumthingtotalkabt has also produced winners Sum Midnight (Midnight Lute) and Just Talkin (Midshipman). She is also represented by the unraced 2-year-old colt Dr. Corday (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}); a yearling colt by Treasure Beach (GB) and weanling filly by Poseidon’s Warrior.

“I have mixed emotions, but it’s the right time to take some money off the table,” Lowe concluded.
