Former middle-distance champion Hurricane Run (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}–Hold On {Ger}, by Surumu {Ger}) has died at stud in Germany. The 14-year-old had stood at the stud of his breeder, Gestut Ammerland, since 2013, having formerly stood at Coolmore in Ireland.

“It is with great sadness that we would like to announce that we have lost our great stallion Hurricane Run due to serious complications during a planned routine operation,” Ammerland said in a statement. “At this point we would like to thank all the breeders who supported him since he was launched as a stallion in Germany.”

Trained by Andre Fabre, Hurricane Run went unbeaten through his first three starts, including the G2 Prix Hocquart in 2005, before finishing a quarter-length behind Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) when second in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. He would not be beaten in his next four outings, however. He took the G1 Irish Derby, after which he was bought by Coolmore’s Michael Tabor, and added the G2 Prix Niel and the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He opened his 4-year-old account with a seven-length win over the great mare Alexander Goldrun in the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup in 2006. He lost the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud by a neck to another great mare in Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), but bested Electrocutionist (Red Ransom) and Heart’s Cry (Jpn) (Sunday Silence) next out in Ascot’s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. He could manage only third behind Rail Link (GB) (Dansili {GB}) in his Arc defense, and signed off with a sixth-place finish in the GI Breeders’ Cup Turf.

At stud, Hurricane Run sired 13 group winners and 16 listed winners, headed by Ectot (GB), a Group 1 winner in both France and the U.S., and Magic Hurricane (Ire), winner of Australia’s G1 The Metropolitan.
